We’ve Got to Give Them Hope 2026

Andrea Bowers’s artwork focuses on the experiences of people who have dedicated their energy to struggles for justice. For this project, she studied the life and activism of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in California history. Drawing on quotes from Milk’s many speeches, including remarks he delivered at the 1978 Gay Freedom Day Parade, Bowers has created neon signs that amplify his views on hope, liberty, and compassion. The quotes are framed by designs inspired by the marquee of the Castro Theatre, an iconic 1922 building in the heart of the Castro neighborhood that the LGBTQ community has long called home, and where Milk served as a city supervisor.

The installation is punctuated by disco balls, which Bowers hopes will bring unexpected pleasure to travelers and augment the celebration of Milk’s commitment to human rights.
