Vito Acconci began his artistic career as a poet, and came to national prominence in the early 1970s as an artist working in performance and conceptual art. Acconci’s work is often characterized by a direct involvement of the viewer as an element in the artwork. In this etching, rather than just looking at the wings, the artist suggests that the viewer has a place within the wings; lean back against the wall and see if you can fly!
