Richard Mayhew is known for his expressionistic landscapes characterized by his mastery of light and color. His use of close color tonalities and avoidance of hard shapes and lines result in mystical landscapes that often flow into abstraction.

Mayhew says, "I paint the essence of nature, always seeking the unique spiritual mood of the landscape." He says his affinity for land comes from his African and Native American heritage. "It's a dual commitment to nature. The land is very important to both cultures in terms of stimulation and spiritual sensitivity, and it's very important to me."
