Heroes of the City

Presented to Franklin Eugene Raymond Whitney, Chief Engineer of the Fire Department of San Francisco by the Members of Howard Engine Company No. 3 as a token of their esteem as an officer, friend, and brother fireman. January 1, 1853

Charles H. Ackerson (1836–91) came to San Francisco from New York in 1850, at the age of fourteen. Ackerson volunteered with the Howard, Tiger, and California engine companies before he was appointed second Assistant Chief Engineer in 1866 after the professionalization of the department. In 1870, he became the department’s Second Chief Engineer and served until 1871, when David Scannell replaced him.

Lafayette Hook & Ladder Company Number 2 consisted almost entirely of French immigrants. H. A. Cobb and E. Grisar organized the company in 1853, which was located at 627 Broadway. Lafayette’s ranks included many experienced French firemen. The company was modeled after Parisian fire companies, including authentically French-styled uniforms. The front of this parade helmet features a fire hand grenade with crossed axes.
