San Francisco Airport Museums Presents Cast in Bronze: The Sculpture of Arthur Putnam
New Exhibition Features Objects from the Collection of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cast in Bronze: The Sculpture of Arthur Putnam, a new exhibition at San Francisco International Airport, explores the life and career of Arthur Putnam (1873-1930), a San Francisco sculptor known primarily for his bronze animals and human figures.

The exhibition presents 60 objects from the collection of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco to trace the evolution of Putnam’s works - from his early sketches and studies to later bronzes cast at the renowned Alexis Rudier Foundry in Paris. Sculpture subjects range from animals including the puma, bear and lion, to human figures such as “Contortionist” (1901) and “Prospector” (1903).

To demonstrate the sculpture process, the exhibition presents a selection of Putnam’s preparatory plaster maquettes in juxtaposition with his finished bronzes.

Cast in Bronze: The Sculpture of Arthur Putnam is located pre-security in International Terminal Gallery A-2. On view through April 15, 2004, the exhibition is open 24 hours a day, free of charge.

San Francisco Airport Museums

The San Francisco Airport Museums program was established by the Airport Commission in 1980 for the purposes of humanizing the Airport environment, providing visibility for the unique cultural life of San Francisco, and providing educational services for the traveling public. Today, the San Francisco Airport Museums features approximately twenty galleries throughout the Airport terminals displaying a rotating schedule of art, history, science, and cultural exhibitions. A permanent collection dedicated to the history of commercial aviation, the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library and Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum, is located in the International Terminal, open Sunday through Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed Saturdays and holidays.
