Takes Flight at Exclusive Nov. 30 Media Preview

WHAT: Sneak preview of the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library and Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum (ALM) in SFO's new International Terminal. The ALM is part of the acclaimed San Francisco Airport Museums program -- the world's first fully accredited museum-in-an-airport. The 11,500-square-foot facility -- which will officially open to the public on Monday, December 11, 2000 -- features a 5,000-volume library and an extensive collection of aviation artifacts and ephemera, some of which will be on view to the public for the first time. The tour will also preview inaugural exhibits in the terminal’s new gallery spaces.

The tour will include:

  • Viewing of the museum site, which boasts many architectural features reminiscent of San Francisco Airport’s 1937 air terminal building.
  • Highlights of inaugural exhibition objects including: the first flight attendant’s uniform, a wicker passenger seat from a 1928 commercial aircraft, early flight bags, dinnerware and other artifacts.
  • A preview of inaugural exhibits in the terminal’s gallery spaces including: 19th century French mechanical toys, California Native American baskets, parasols from Japan and Abelam ancestral figures from Papua, New Guinea
