Caticons: The Cat in Art
New exhibition explores the history of the cat and its allure through art, literature, and decorative arts from around the world.

SAN FRANCISCO — July 19, 2018 - Cats have charmed people with their mysterious allure for thousands of years, and with an estimated 600 million domesticated cats worldwide, they are clearly the most popular pet today. As adept hunters, many domestic cats are self-sufficient creatures with characteristically nonchalant, independent personalities. Cats were venerated by the ancient Egyptians and celebrated as symbols of good luck throughout Asia. In Medieval Europe, cats were associated with magic, witchcraft, and evil spirits and were persecuted for centuries before they gained cultural acceptance. They became praised by artists and intellectuals during the Renaissance, with Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) proclaiming that “even the smallest feline is a masterpiece.” With work ranging from ceramic and bronze sculptures to paintings, etchings, and drawings, this exhibition presents more than one hundred objects from around the world that celebrate our feline companion, the cat.

A very special thank you to Sandy Lerner for making this exhibition possible.
