Student Art: Creative Exploration Through Painting and Drawing
Creative Exploration Through Painting and Drawing
Located in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco, University High School (UHS) is an academically rigorous independent high school. UHS welcomes students who demonstrate motivation and ability to engage in an education that fosters responsibility and the spirited pursuit of knowledge. UHS is a school where adults believe in the promise of every student and work together to build and sustain a community of diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and talents. UHS challenges each individual to live a life of integrity, inquiry, and purpose.
At UHS, the arts program is an academic department and a vibrant, integral part of the community. The school values the vital role that the arts play in a stimulating and inspired education. Students are encouraged to excel beyond a technical knowledge of each discipline to a more conceptual and historical understanding of the arts.
Students of drawing and painting at UHS produce works in a variety of media, and on themes ranging from personal to universal. Students are exposed to the work of contemporary artists in the classroom; in professional art exhibitions held at the school; through books and slideshows; and on field trips to studios, galleries, and museums. The goal is to balance a strong technical practice with a deeper investigation into concepts and themes so that students can articulately express ideas while commenting on their surroundings.
