Lowrider Bikes in North Califas

Lowriding is an extension and artistic expression of one’s identity. Rooted in pride and respect, lowriding is a lifestyle, a celebration of diverse cultures that are characterized by community, family, strength, and tradition. A lowrider, defined as both a person and a vehicle, moves “low and slow” through public spaces, cruising the streets at their own pace and affirming that they are present. Lowriders participate in competitive shows and other events, proudly displaying the creativity and innovation of their customized cars and bicycles. As a counterculture, lowriding provides an avenue for sociocultural continuity and resistance, binding diverse groups of people together and working to erase negative stigmas. Lowriding is often multigenerational, transferring vehicles, knowledge, and skillsets through family lines. Many parents introduce their children to lowriding by building bicycles as collaborative projects, while others discover the world of lowrider bikes on their own. Some of these younger lowriders eventually transition to customized cars, while others maintain a lifelong dedication to building and showing their bicycles. This exhibition presents a range of lowrider bikes, from vehicles that are made to show and ride, to others that are built for competition and display.
