Interview conducted on January, 26, 1998. 3 audio cassettes The interview describes Captain H. J. “Skeeter” Blanco’s career with Pan American World Airways from 1941 until his retirement in 1978. He describes his early training in the Civilian Pilots Training (CPT) program and his role as an instructor there; his ground school training with Pan American in both Miami and New York and the reasons he attended both; and his experiences as First Officer (Copilot), Captain (Pilot), and Check Captain (Check Pilot). He describes the airplanes he flew, including the Douglas DC 3, DC 4, DC 6, and DC 7; the Boeing 307, 377, 707, and 747; the Sikorsky S 40 and S 42; and the Consolidated Commodore and PB2Y 3. He discusses his negative experiences on the flying boats and his preference for jets. Captain Blanco discusses the routes he flew, including The Latin American Division routes from Miami to Havana, Belem (Brazil), Rio de Janeiro, Panama, and Puerto Rico; New York to Puerto Rico; and the Pacific Division routes from San Francisco to Honolulu, Tonga, Fiji, Saigon, Da Nang, and Hong Kong. He relates his memories of San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in 1954. He discusses the evolution of flight training and operations over his career; some inflight incidents that he experienced or was familiar with; and his work during the Korean airlift and the war in Vietnam. He discusses his thoughts on the evolution of instrument flight and modern flight training.
