This interview describes Mr. Toarmina’s career with Pan American Airways from 1942 until his retirement in 1980. He describes the work he performed as a Steward / Flight Attendant, Purser, Check Purser, and Flight Director. He discusses in detail the several months of training he received at Treasure Island for his work as a steward on a seaplane, his further training on procedures on landplanes, and additional training for his other roles. He describes his work on the Boeing 314, the 377 Stratocruiser, 707, and 747; the Consolidated PB2Y 3; and the Douglas DC 4 and DC 6. He describes his experiences while flying over the Pacific Ocean during World War II and relates an in-flight incident at Funafuti in 1944 involving a PB2Y 3.
Mr. Toarmina discusses the routes he flew, including the Pacific Division routes from San Francisco to Honolulu, Wake Island, Midway, Noumea, Canton Island, Funafuti, Palmyra, Espiritu Santo, Sydney, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Singapore. He explains in detail his duties and procedures on the Clipper flights and how these responsibilities changed over the years. He describes the introduction of female flight attendants and the changes he observed in the hiring and employment practices. Mr. Toarmina talks about the seniority system for stewards and pursers and his thoughts about Pan American’s union for flight attendants. He describes in detail the physical layout of the Treasure Island Terminal in 1942 as well as the buildings and activity at Mills Field. He discusses his encounters with Juan Trippe, Charles Lindbergh, Admiral Chester Nimitz, King Rama IX and Queen Sirikit of Thailand, and Ava Gardener.
