Description
Interview conducted on November 12, 1997.
This interview describes Captain Wallace Dean’s experiences during his career as a Fifth Officer, Fourth Officer, Third Officer (Navigator), Second Officer (Co-Pilot), and Captain (Pilot) at Pan American World Airways. He describes his education as a pilot at various flight schools; the training he received from Pan American in Walnut Creek, CA; and additional instruction on jet aircraft in Honolulu, HI. He discusses his recollections of the flights originating at Treasure Island, the move to the Coast Guard Naval Station (Seaplane Base), and the transition to Mills Field and San Francisco Municipal Airport (now San Francisco International Airport or SFO). He describes the buildings that Pan American maintained at SFO in the late 1940s and 1950s.
He describes the routes he flew, including the Pacific Division from San Francisco to Honolulu, Palmyra Island, Canton Island, Funafuti, Espirito Santo, and Brisbane; from Tokyo to Taipei, Saigon, Da Nang, Cam Rahn Bay, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Sydney, Calcutta; and the round-the-world route. He relates his experiences flying the Martin PBM; the Consolidated PB2Y-3 Coronado; the Boeing 314, 377 Stratocruiser, 707, and 727; and the Douglas DC 4. Captain Dean discusses the extended time required for him to qualify as Captain due to Pan American’s small number of flights early in his career. He describes several incidents, including a bomb threat on one of his flights. He relates several secondhand stories about in-flight incidents. He describes his interactions with Wiley Post, Harold Gatty, Amelia Earhart, Fred Noonan, and Will Rogers.
