This interview describes Captain Frederick Miller’s career as a Pilot / Captain for Pan American World Airways from 1943 to 1974. He discusses the ground school training and the A & E (Airplane and Engineering) license he received at Parks Air College, his Civilian Pilots Training (CPT) instructor’s education, his work as an instructor of military pilots at the Hawthorne School of Aeronautics, and the navigation and instrument training he received from Pan American. He describes his experiences while flying the Consolidated PB2Y-3; the Boeing 314, 377, and 707; and the Douglas DC 4 and DC 7.
Captain Miller discusses the routes he flew for the Pacific Division from San Francisco to Honolulu, Palmyra Atoll, Canton Island, Funafuti, Espiritu Santo, Brisbane, Auckland, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Calcutta, Manila, Tokyo, Korea, Saigon, and Fairbanks. He relates his experiences as the Co-pilot on Pan Am Flight 843 when the aircraft lost an engine and part of the wing upon takeoff from San Francisco in 1965. He relates an experience in which he was co-piloting a flight from Calcutta that carried a large quantity of gold. He discusses some of the prominent figures he met, including Charles and Anne Lindbergh as well as Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. He describes Treasure Island in 1943 and alludes to the move to the current location of San Francisco International Airport (SFO).
