Interview conducted on December 6, 1997. 3 duplicate audio cassettes The interview describes Captain Cornelius K. Dunbar’s experiences as a pilot for Pan American World Airways from 1936 until his retirement in 1967. He discusses his civilian training at the Embry Riddle Flying School, his military training in the Army Air Corps at March and Kelly Fields in 1929, his service in the 15th Observation Squad flying observation planes, and the flight and camera equipment he used. He discusses his hiring by Pan American in 1936, his education in flight school, and his work as a Navigator, Copilot, and Pilot. He describes the routes he flew, including from Brownsville to Panama, and Guatemala; from New York to Horta (Azores) and Lisbon; and from San Francisco to Honolulu, Canton Island, Espiritu Santo, Funafuti, Tokyo, Vietnam, London, Frankfurt, Vienna, Constantinople (Istanbul), Beirut, and the round-the-world route. He discusses the commercial airplanes he flew, including the Waco 9 and Waco 10; the Martin PBM 3 and the M 130; the Douglas DC 2 and DC 3; the Sikorsky S 42; and the Boeing 314, 377 Stratocruiser, 707, and 747. Captain Dunbar relates his experiences flying for Pan American during World War II and discusses the relationship between the company and the United States military. He describes his encounters with Lt. General James Doolittle, Charles Lindbergh, Andre Priester, R. O. D. Sullivan, and Harold Gray, as well as with the actor Charles Boyer. He provides a very brief description of Treasure Island and Coast Guard Station at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in the 1940s.
