Spectacular Spectacles on View at SFO
New Exhibition Features Collection of Historic Eyewear

SAN FRANCISCO -- Spectacular Spectacles, a new exhibition at San Francisco International Airport, explores the evolution of both technology and craftsmanship in eyewear through a collection of approximately 300 eyeglasses and related accessories.

The exhibition emphasizes eyewear from the eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries. In addition to a historical overview of the well-known spectacle form of two lenses, frame, nose bridge and earpieces, more unusual examples of eyewear such as wig spectacles, scissor spectacles, and bifocals are featured. Designs created for elegant and specialized use appear in sections focused on pince-nez, opera glasses, lorgnettes, monoculars and canes. Many of the eyeglasses are accompanied by ornate, finely crafted cases that often resemble jewelry. Also included are examples of Eskimo and Native American eyewear, as well as protective eyewear.

All objects are on loan from the Museum of Vision, San Francisco, California.

Spectacular Spectacles is on view twenty-four hours a day through May 2005 free of charge. The exhibition is located pre-security on the Departures/Ticketing Level of the International Terminal.

San Francisco Airport Museums

The San Francisco Airport Museums program was established by the Airport Commission in 1980 for the purposes of humanizing the Airport environment, providing visibility for the unique cultural life of San Francisco, and providing educational services for the traveling public. Today, the San Francisco Airport Museums features approximately twenty galleries throughout the Airport terminals displaying a rotating schedule of art, history, science, and cultural exhibitions, as well as the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library and Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum, a permanent collection dedicated to the history of commercial aviation.
