San Francisco International Airport to Host Free Lecture on Symbolism in Chinese Art

SAN FRANCISCO —  In conjunction with the exhibition Hidden Meanings: Symbolism in Chinese Art, now on view at San Francisco International Airport, Terese Tse Bartholomew, Curator Emeritus of Himalayan Art and Chinese Decorative Art, Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, will present a lecture on Sunday, November 7, at 1:30 p.m. The free lecture will be held at the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library & Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum located in the International Terminal Main Hall, Departures Level.

This illustrated lecture will explore the following topics: Can decorative objects increase one’s wealth, happiness, or longevity?  Traditionally, many Chinese have believed that they could—a s long as they included the appropriate auspicious symbols.  In this talk, Ms. Bartholomew will give a thorough guide to such symbols.

A tour of the exhibition Hidden Meanings: Symbolism in Chinese Art lead by Ms. Bartholomew will follow the lecture. This exhibition presents more than 100 porcelains and jades—most of which were originally made for imperial courts—to illustrate many pictorial motifs and unlock the mysteries of these propitious signs, offering a fascinating glimpse into the time-honored importance of auspicious symbolism in Chinese culture.

This exhibition is beyond the security checkpoint so RSVP is required for the tour.  Exhibition tour slots are available on a first come first serve basis, with a maximum of fifty participants allowed. RSVP is not necessary for the lecture.

Admission to the lecture and tour are free.  Please contact Nicole Mullen for additional information at (650) 821-6783 or nicole.mullen@flysfo.com . Present your Airport garage ticket for complimentary parking. For directions and parking information, please visit: http://www.flysfo.com/web/page/sfo_museum/aviation_library_museum/directions/.
