Upcoming Exhibition | Instrumental Rock
Instrumental surf music swept across the United States like a great sonic wave during the early 1960s. The new sound was a product of Southern California and originated alongside the booming pop-cultural surfing phenomenon that has since captivated millions. Energetic and melodic, with little or no vocal accompaniment, instrumental surf music was the soundtrack for surfers, beachgoers, and countless others who were attracted to the popularity and mystique of surfing. This exhibit will explore instrumental surf music in relation to the larger genre of instrumental rock with guitars, albums, and ephemera from the 1950s to the present.
